How to Find Peace in the Midst of Chaos
What Is Peace?
Peace can be described as:
Prayerful
Expectation
Amidst
Chaos
Everywhere
Biblical peace does not require peaceful circumstances. It is the quiet assurance that God is present, faithful, and still in control—even when life feels uncertain.
For most of my adult life, I carried a knot of anxiety in the pit of my stomach. It had been there for so long that worry felt normal.
Then one day, the knot was gone.
Instead of immediately feeling relieved, I wondered whether something was wrong with me. The absence of anxiety felt so unfamiliar that I did not recognize it. Through the gentle revelation of the Holy Spirit, I began to understand that the “feeling of nothing” was actually peace.
True story!
We Have Been Conditioned to Worry
Sometimes I look at everything happening around me and feel almost guilty for not worrying. There are troubling situations in the world, uncertainty in our country, and practical concerns such as how the bills will be paid.
We live in a culture that treats constant worry as proof that we care. If we are not anxious, upset, or continually following every development, people may assume we are uninformed or indifferent.
But peace is not indifference.
Peace is choosing to trust God while still caring deeply. It allows us to pray, respond wisely, and love others without being controlled by fear.
The Bible tells us:
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
—Philippians 4:6–7
God does not tell us to deny our concerns. He invites us to bring every concern to Him. As we pray, ask, and give thanks, His peace begins to guard the places where fear tries to take hold.
Isaiah 53:5 reminds us that Jesus was chastised for our peace. He paid a great price so that we could be reconciled to God and experience the wholeness found in Him.
Peace is not something we have to earn. It is something Christ has made available to us.
Pay Attention to What Is Feeding Your Heart
Recently, I began a fast from social media and the news. Within a short time, I noticed that I had more peace than I had experienced in several weeks.
Without realizing it, I had been allowing a steady stream of alarming headlines, political arguments, frightening predictions, and angry opinions to shape my thoughts. The more I watched, the more unsettled I became.
Staying informed is not necessarily wrong. But continually consuming information that feeds fear can make it difficult to hear the gentle voice of God.
I could not find a verse telling me that I must know everything happening in the world. I also could not find one that said, “Keep your mind on the news, and you will have peace.”
Instead, Scripture says:
“You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.”
—Isaiah 26:3
Peace is connected to the direction of our attention.
When our minds remain fixed on everything that might go wrong, anxiety grows. When we turn our attention toward the character and promises of God, trust begins to grow.
You Do Not Have to Carry the Weight of the World
There is so much we cannot control.
We cannot control every decision made by leaders. We cannot prevent every crisis. We cannot predict what will happen tomorrow.
But we can pray.
We can love the person in front of us. We can share the hope we have found in Jesus Christ. We can offer a kind word, meet a practical need, and remind a weary person that God has not forgotten her.
We can be faithful with what God has placed in our hands and trust Him with what He has not.
When people look at your life during a difficult season, what do they see?
Do they see fear, anger, and anxiety controlling your responses? Or do they see a quiet confidence that cannot be explained by your circumstances?
This does not mean you will never struggle. Peaceful people still experience grief, disappointment, and uncertainty. The difference is that they know where to take those feelings.
Behold the Prince of Peace
Jesus is called the Prince of Peace, and the government rests upon His shoulders—not ours (Isaiah 9:6).
What a relief it is to remember that we were never created to carry everything.
Second Corinthians 3:18 teaches us that as we behold the Lord, we are transformed into His image. What holds our attention gradually shapes our hearts.
So, what are you beholding?
Are you continually beholding the chaos, or are you beholding Christ?
Are you giving more attention to frightening predictions or to God’s faithful promises?
Are you filling your mind with voices that stir up fear, or are you making room for the voice of your Shepherd?
We do not ignore reality. We simply refuse to allow the chaos around us to become greater in our minds than the God who is with us.
Choose a Trustworthy Source
As I continued my media fast, I realized how difficult it can be to navigate endless news cycles and social media posts. Stories may be incomplete. Images and videos can be presented without context. Our personal beliefs can also affect how we interpret what we see.
That is why we need an unchanging foundation.
The Word of God does not shift with the latest headline. It reminds us who God is, what He has promised, and where our true security is found.
Scripture tells us that there will be troubling events in the world (Luke 21:11). But Scripture also tells us that God is our strong tower, our rock and fortress, and our shelter when we abide in Him (Psalm 91).
Sometimes our desire to know everything is really an attempt to feel in control. But information cannot give us the security that only God can provide.
Knowledge is only as trustworthy as its source. Proverbs 1:7 says that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.
Before you accept every voice speaking into your life, ask:
- Is this drawing me closer to God or deeper into fear?
- Is this helping me respond with wisdom or merely keeping me agitated?
- Am I seeking information because I need it, or because I am trying to feel in control?
- Have I spent as much time in God’s Word as I have listening to the world?
You Can Have Peace in the Storm
Do you need peace today?
Turn your heart toward the Prince of Peace.
Jesus came to guide our feet into the way of peace (Luke 1:79). He is the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, and the Author and Finisher of our faith.
Tell Him what is troubling you. Name your fears honestly. Ask Him for what you need. Thank Him for the ways He has already been faithful.
Then release into His hands what you were never meant to carry.
God’s peace may not immediately change the circumstances around you, but it can change what is happening within you. His peace can settle your heart, steady your thoughts, and remind you that you are not facing this storm alone.
You do not have to understand everything to trust the One who does.
You do not have to know what tomorrow holds to know that God will be there.
You do not have to wait for the chaos to end before receiving His peace.
A Simple Practice for Finding Peace
When anxiety begins to rise, pause and take these five steps:
- Step away from the noise. Turn off the news or set down your phone for a little while.
- Name what is troubling you. Be honest with God about your fears.
- Make your request known. Ask Him specifically for the help, wisdom, or provision you need.
- Remember His faithfulness. Thank Him for the ways He has carried you before.
- Refocus on Jesus. Read Scripture, worship, and rest in the presence of the Prince of Peace.
Peace is:
Prayerful
Expectation
Amidst
Chaos
Everywhere
He is with you in the storm.
Prayer
Prince of Peace, my heart is weary from the noise and uncertainty around me. Forgive me for trying to carry burdens that belong in Your hands. Help me step away from the voices that feed my fear and turn my attention toward You.
I bring You every concern that is weighing on me today. Guard my heart and mind with Your peace. Remind me that You are my refuge, my strong tower, and my steady Rock.
Teach me to trust You even when I do not understand what is happening. Help me live in such a way that others see Your peace in me. Thank You for being present with me in every storm.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
Reflection Questions
- What has been feeding fear or anxiety in my heart lately?
- Is there a source of noise I need to limit for a season?
- What burden am I carrying that I need to place in God’s hands?
- Which promise from Scripture can I return to when anxiety rises?
- What would it look like for me to behold Jesus today?
